Help me to help you

Thank you once again for booking a slot to record your episode on my podcast The Segilola Salami Show. I have written the article below to help you get the best out of the show.

As you may already know, my podcast is both an entertaining and an educative podcast show. At the end of each episode, I hope that each listener goes away feeling that they have learned something new and it has been worth their while investing the time to listen to the show.

I also hope that each guest feels that they have been given ample opportunity to share their message with my network and to reach a larger audience than they would normally reach.

If you work together with me and follow my suggestions below, I believe we can increase engagement with your brand.

Your episode on my podcast will be available in multiple formats and be shared on my podcast feed, on social media and my email list. Thus, it is important we share your content in a way that is attention grabbing.

How to produce attention grabbing content

Once a podcast episode is recorded and edited, it must be packaged in a way that is appealing to the target audience. Within 10 seconds of someone receiving an email or notification about your episode, we need to pique their interest enough for them to want to open the email or open the notification icon.

The way we package your podcast episode is our marketing copy. A great marketing copy must have 4 parts:

• The Headline

• The Hook

• The Story

• Call to action

The Headline:

The purpose of the headline is to gain the attention of your audience. It is the crown on a king. Getting your headline right is important as your audience undoubtedly gets bombarded with lots of information daily. Thus, by making your headline irresistible, you can increase engagement with your content.

A good headline should pique the curiosity of the potential reader. The headline should be audience-centred, written in simple words and contain huge benefits for the reader.

You need to grab attention, use scarcity, and fear of missing out in creating an appealing headline.

That said, the headline used in the subject line of an email should not be more than 50 characters, or else it would be cut short and not be displayed in full.

11 Basic formulas for writing a great headline

1. How to [result] in [timeframe] without [thing you hate doing]. Eg How to Triple Your Sales in 17 days without Making Sales Calls

2. [Number] quick tips to [result]. Eg 7 Quick Tips to losing 5lbs of belly fat in 30 days

3. The fastest way to [undesired event or action]. Eg The Fastest Way to Stop Your Dog Barking Excessively

4. The [number] biggest mistakes you can use when [action]. Eg The 3 Biggest Mistakes You Can Use When Asking a Colleague Out on a Date

5. [Number] Tricks to eliminate [fear]. Eg 11 Tricks to Eliminate Your Fear of Failure

6. The [number] Biggest Myths of [topic]. Eg The 5 Biggest Myths of Affiliate Marketing

7. [number] hacks to [desired outcome]. Eg 6 Hacks to Succeed as a Dropshipper

8. How to 3X [desired outcome] with this little-known secret. Eg How to 3X your page visits with this little-known secret

9. [number] easy techniques to become [desired outcome]. Eg 2 easy techniques to become the highest paid consultant

10. [number] beginner strategies to [desired outcome]. Eg 4 beginner strategies to landing a job

11. How to turn [item with price] into [new high price] Eg How to turn a $7.00 Facebook ad budget into $2000 in profit

Please note that I did not create these formulas for writing a great headline. I found them online and shared them as a useful resource for you.

GUEST TO DO:

Now that we have covered what a good headline is, I need you to please send me an attention-grabbing headline for your episode.

Irrespective of the headline you choose to use for your episode on my podcast, please do not use tricky headlines or incomplete messages. It is important that you remember that the market is full with competitors and people are too busy to try to figure out what you are trying to say. They would rather go for the person who makes their life easier.

If you need more inspiration, go to your local newsagents and look at the headlines on several newspapers.

Designs don’t sell newspapers, headlines do.

The Hook:

Once the headline does its job and the email is opened, this is where the hook comes in. The hook gives the end user a reason to take action.

For instance, imagine you are searching for information on a search engine, eg Google. Once the results are displayed, under each title there is a short summary. That summary gives you more information about what you can expect if you visit that website. That is the hook. It is what pulls you to the content.

Here is another example. When I send an email to my blog subscribers notifying them that another episode of my podcast has been published on my blog, the attention-grabbing headline piques their curiosity and makes them open the email. The short summary that is provided with the attention-grabbing headline, in the body of the email, tells the reader more about that podcast episode. It is what makes the reader decide whether it is worth their while visiting my website to listen to the podcast episode. This is the hook!

GUEST TO DO:

Please send me your hook in one or two sentences that entices the reader to listen to what you have to say on my show.

I am asking you for this information because you know your business better than I do. You know what information you want to share with my audience. By providing me with this information, we are making sure that I am meeting your needs and sharing the exact information that you want to be shared.

The Story

Once the reader has decided to listen to what you have to say, this is where the story comes in. This is where the listener expects to learn something new, but in an entertaining way.

What you say is just as important as how you say it. Think about your own habits. What is it about your favourite show that makes you decide to continue listening to it or continue watching it? Apply that knowledge in how you present your content when recording your episode on my show.

Do bear in mind that not everyone has the time to invest in listening to a podcast show, but they would still like to benefit from the content you share on the show.

If after reading this page you want to change the summary you sent me in your booking form, you can do so now. There should be no more than five bullet points that summarises the information you share on the show itself.

The story you share on the show should tie in with the headline and the hook. When I say story, I am actually referring to the bulk of what you say on the show during our conversation.

When sharing your story on the show, you shouldn’t forget what action you want the listener to take. Try to tie in your call to action, that is, the action you want the listener to take after listening to the information you are sharing on the show or the information that you provide in the summary that I would be including in the show notes.

When thinking about your headline, your hook, and your story, please try to be unique. Ask yourself what is your unique selling point? Why should anyone choose to listen to what you have to say over someone else who does exactly the same thing as you do? Whatever topic you want to share on the show, please carry out a little research to find out if someone else has said that exact same thing. Or see if you can bring a fresh angle to what has been said already. If you share information that is already widely available without bringing in a new perspective without bringing in new content, then what reason would the audience have to listen to what you have to say?

Unless you want to change the information you included in your booking form, there’s nothing extra I need you to do here. So this is a good time to review the 5 bullet points you submitted in your booking.

Call to action

A call to action is not necessarily about sales. You can get the listener of your episode to take other action. For instance, you may ask them to send you an email or you may ask them to visit your website. You do not want to confuse the person listening to your episode or reading the show notes. So, make your call to action clear and one call to action is enough.

Whilst my podcast is not a sales platform or a sales show, if you focus on the benefits that you can offer to the person who is listening to you, you may very well find yourself with an increase in sales.

GUEST TO DO:

Please send me one call to action to include in the show notes of your episode. This will be the same call to action you share on the show.

Understanding your audience

It is important that you understand that as human beings we are all selfish. We’re always looking out for what is in our own best interests and what is in our own selfish interests. For instance, you’re reading the contents of this page because you hope that it would offer value to you. The same thing with every other person in the world.

Once you understand that people are selfish, when you’re producing content, you will focus on what is in your target audience’s best interest. Your content will refer to the end user on a one-on-one level, you will make the person feel that you are talking directly about them or to them.

Your headline, your hook, your story should appeal to the readers self-interest and should promise them a benefit. For example, will you save them time? Will you make them money? Will it make the reader more beautiful? Will it make the reader healthier? Will it increase their sales?

Ask yourself this question: What can you offer the person that is listening to you today?

Quality of your episode

This is important for people who are recording their episode on the show remotely.

• Make sure that on the day you’re in a quiet room, where external noise cannot be heard. If possible, close all windows. It is also recommended you put your mobile phone on silent and not vibration as the sound of the vibrations may be picked up in the recording. It is important that there is no external noise that can be picked up during the recording as this may ruin the listening experience.

• Try to invest in a plug-in microphone and headphone as the quality of your recording may be better than that of the one built into your device

• Try to speak clearly, slowly and enunciate your words

• Try to sound happy and not talk in monotones

KEY INFORMATION

  • The time of the recording is London, UK timezone. If you have not already done so, please use a timezone converter to ensure that you know the time in your area.
  • Please add your booking to your calendar and set a reminder.

SAMPLE BLOG POST

Just the other day, I saw a tweet about an audio podcast show set in a virtual cafe called The Segilola Salami Show. I was immediately intrigued by the format and had to listen to a few episodes of the show. I immediately fell in love with the very informal nature of the show and the fact that it is both educative and entertaining. This spurred me to book a slot to appear as a guest on the show too.

As an author that has published seven children’s books to date, I believe I have a lot to offer the listeners of the show in terms of the things I learned from publishing and also my motivation for writing children’s books. You can click the player below to listen to the show too.

24-HOURS BEFORE YOUR SLOT TO RECORD YOUR EPISODE

ON THE DAY OF YOUR RECORDING

  • Try to be online at least 15 minutes before your scheduled time
  • Keep an eye on your inbox as you will receive an email with the link to the Zoom app where the show is recorded a few minutes to your scheduled time
  • Remember to either turn off your phone or put it on silent. Do not put it on vibrate
  • Stay in a room that is quiet and is likely not going to pick up any external noises
  • Email the Zoom link you receive to any of your followers who want to listen to the show live
  • Post a tweet or comment on Facebook saying you are about to start recording and invite your fans to listen in by including the Zoom link.
  • Feel free to ask Segilola Salami any questions you may have before the recording starts

DURING THE RECORDING

  • Have fun!
  • As an audio podcast, listeners enjoy listening to the show based on the rapport between the host and the guest.
  • The day the show is recorded is not the day it is broadcast. Thus it is essential that you do not make any time sensitive references.
There is currently a time lag of 2 months from when an episode is recorded to when it is broadcast. Thus, if you say ‘my book goes on sale tomorrow for 5 days only’, when your episode is broadcast, the sale would have been over. This makes your statement irrelevant to the listeners
  • Non-time sensitive statements are OK eg I have to go to work tomorrow.
  • The show is not a radio advert, so you cannot simply talk about your books, products or service. Listeners of the show want to find out more about the person behind the brand. What can they learn from your journey.
  • At the start of the show, you will have some time to introduce yourself and tell listeners and what your do, your products or service.
  • The rest of the time should be focused of giving value to the listeners.

AFTER THE RECORDING

  • Send Segilola Salami an email with feedback about your experience recording your segment. What did you like about your experience? What can be improved upon?
  • Do you know anyone who would benefit from being a guest on the show? Share your experience with them and recommend that they book their own slot too via Segilola Salami’s online calendar.
  • Post a tweet and Facebook comment sharing your experience recording your segment. Tell your followers what they can expect from your episode when it is aired
  • It is important you have connected with Segilola Salami on social media to ensure that she has your correct profiles to tag you in when sharing your episode.

SAMPLE REFERRAL EMAIL

Dear [insert name of person],

Hope you are keeping well? I just finished recording my segment on The Segilola Salami Show. The show is a once weekly podcast show set in a virtual cafe where guests talk about books and publishing.

On my segment, I talked about the things I learned from publishing my own books with the hope of teaching the listeners something about book publishing.

As you are a freelance writer , I thought you would be interested in appearing on the show too to share how you started your career as a freelance writer and maybe the listeners would get some tips from you on how to succeed as a writer.
