Hey guys! Maymunah here! ?
I was finally able to read a “proper book” for pleasure over the past week, something which I don’t do very often because 99.9% of the time I’m either rereading books that I’ve read about a billion times or I’m catching up with news and Power Ranger gossip.
Originally, I was very daunted by reading it. I mean, I love classics and all but this book was huge. Nevertheless, I decided I would give it a shot.
Anne of Green Gables by L.M Montgomery is about a little red headed orphan who is reluctantly adopted by a brother and sister after a mixup by the orphanage. The story follows Anne as she grows up from an impatient, stubborn, ferocious and somewhat clumsy child of eleven to an intelligent young lady.
If you’ve read What Katy Did by Susan Coolidge, you’ll know what I mean when I say Anne of Green Gables is a lot like it. Anne isn’t made to be a perfect character at all; she has so many delightful qualities that hooks the reader in and makes you want to stay with her. Reading her speech is so energetic and reminds me you of children’s incredible fantasies and imagination. It also gives a few lessons about life and family too.
My favourite part about Anne was the way she talked. Her conversations took over two pages at a time and often ended in Marilla Cuthbert, her foster mother telling her to be quiet and not to talk so much. It’s sort of reminded me of the way I talked on and on about absolutely nothing in particular. It really made me smile.
Currently, the book has been made into annual productions since 1964 in Canada and in 1985 a movie was made around the novel.
I’d recommend this story to mainly girls above the age of 12. Although the book seems long, I think it’s a brilliant coming-of-age type tale that explores some of the issues a teenager would have back in the 1800s told from an orphan’s perspective. I think I’m going to get my hands on one of the sequels and follow Anne a little further!
