3 Ways Grandparents are Better than Parents

Following last week’s post by Susan Day, here’s another post from a grandparent’s perspective. Susan thinks (as a grandparent herself) that grandparents are better than parents. She shares 3 ways she feels grandparents are better than parents. Happy reading!

Come on, you know it’s true. Grandparents are so much better than parents. Parents are all about rules and boundaries. They are always going on about what you can and can’t do. They are always busy and sometimes too tired to really connect with their kids. Grandparents, on the other hand, are about fun and games, but they also offer a consistency and a deep connection to family and heritage, which comes from being around for so long.

1 Grandparents are Super at Spoiling their Grandkids

Grandparents are great at spoiling their grandkids. It’s an old adage, but it’s true. They don’t even seem to know the word ‘no’. Perhaps they have forgotten it, or perhaps they know that someone else is setting the boundaries so they don’t have to.

One of the best ways grandparents can spoil their grandkids with is time. Many grandparents are retired or only work part time. They don’t have to work such long hours as their children and can dedicate more time to their grandkids.

What better way to spoil children than to take them to the park or read a book to them? Games and outdoor activities are usually high on grandparents’ list of wonderful ways to spoil grandchildren.

2 Grandparents Have Been There, Done That

Having raised children of their own, most grandparents have an abundance of patience. It’s remarkable how one human being can evolve from a tired, grumpy parent to a super-patient grandparent in just a few decades.

Grandparents are also extremely kind. They know all the dangers children can get into, and they understand that children grow and adapt and, for the most part, come out alright in the end.

They don’t have all that parent-angst which makes spending time with parents so very tiring. Grandparents have been there, and done that, which makes them so much more fun to be around.

3 Grandparents Have Love

Love is one of those four-letter words which most kids run a mile from. However, truth be known they really do enjoy all those extra cuddles and smoochies that grandparents have in abundance.

Any grandparent who has spent time thinking about their grandkids will tell you that those little people, their children in replica, are the greatest things in the world. Grandparents know that they have finally achieved something so powerful and so wonderful when they see their grandkids doing well at school or just being the best little people they can be.

Now, I don’t want to get all serious on you, but I will remind you that studies have shown that when grandparents have a strong relationship with their grandchildren both are less likely to develop depression. Such is the strong bond these two share.

So, if you are a grandparent and you haven’t talked or cuddled your grandkids for a while, make sure you do it soon. They need you to be a wonderful example of patience, kindness and love.

  • Grandparents are a great example of patience, kindness and love. I was very close to my grandparents and they showed me this every day I was with them.
