How to Get Your Kids Reading

How to Get Your Kids Reading

Hi guys! Maymunah here ?

So, kids just refuse to pick up a book. You spend most of your time nagging them to leave the TV and read something, even if it happens to be your cookery book handed down from your grandmother. What do you do? How do you Get Your Kids Reading?

It’s a problem I think lots of people face these days. But when you think of it, we actually read more than we think, and that’s the key clue to getting your children to start reading more books.

For example, I’m ashamed to admit it but I don’t read as many books as I’d like to. Instead, I like reading the paper at school, always read the news online, spend ages keeping up on Facebook and Twitter and I’m often on Rangerboard (just something for us nerds ?)

My point is, you don’t have to pick up a book to be reading. Now, granted, it’s a bit stereotypical but boys tend to like non-fiction better. So find them something they enjoy! You can find books on favourite hobbies and how-to manuals everywhere. And with so many books out there, I’ll bet there’s a fiction book on your pastime too.

Which reminds me of something us teens especially are really into (well maybe not me…)
Fanfics! Fan fictions are stories written by fans of a certain thing about the thing. So, people really into Doctor Who can read stories about it from other fans. And you can write your own so it’s a really fun way for kids to let their imagination go wild!

But just a quick word of warning, I have yet to find or hear of a fanfic site which is appropriate for children so make sure you supervise them. Obviously anyone can write fanfics so who knows what you could find on there?

So, to summarise. Find something new for your child! And just remember, reading the back of a cereal box could be a way to get the children into something new.
